What is an ultrasonic flow meter?

An ultrasonic flowmeter is a useful piece of equipment that measures the velocity of fluids by using ultrasound. This flow meter specifically calculates volume flow by using ultrasonic transducers. This enables the flow meter to measure the average velocity of fluid along the path of emitted ultrasound beams.

There are two ways in which this can be done: either by averaging the difference in measured transit times between the pulses of ultrasound propagating into and against the flow direction or by measuring the frequency shift from the Doppler effect.

It’s important to note that ultrasonic flowmeters are affected by the acoustic properties of the fluid and can be influenced by temperature, density, viscosity, and suspended particulates, depending on the exact flowmeter. However, despite any potential drawbacks, ultrasonic flowmeters are fantastic pieces of technology.
